For Patients Traveling from Outside of the United States

New England Center for Endometriosis has patients coming to our website site from up to 47 countries. I am honored to participate in your care. Our Endometriosis center focuses on thorough excision of Endometriosis and associated fibrosis, with the restoration of normal anatomy. I do everything possible to help each patient get long-term pain relief and minimize repeat surgeries. While our focus is on the excision of endometriosis for pain relief, many go on to have successful pregnancies.

Starting the Process

  • Patients submit their questions via the New England Center for Endometriosis website
  • Your written consent is required to be able to discuss medical concerns by email
  • Once your written consent in obtained an educational email directed towards your specific concerns is sent to you
  • If you decide to proceed we will need medical records forwarded to New England Center for Endometriosis:
    • Operative notes
    • Surgical photographs if done
    • Pathology reports
    • CT scan reports & discs with actual imaging
    • Ultrasound reports
  1. The Phone Consult
Once appropriate medical records have been received & reviewed your phone consultation can be scheduled. The phone consultation begins with a detailed review of your full medical, surgical, obstetric & gynecologic history. The phone consultation also includes an explanation of our philosophy regarding the treatment of endometriosis by excision (surgical removal of all visible endometriosis and associated fibrosis, with adequate margins, restoring normal anatomy. We will discuss a detailed, personalized surgical treatment plan as well as any additional pre-operative testing that might be recommended. There will be ample time for you to have all your questions answered & concerns discussed.

  2. Pre-operative Visit & Day of Surgery
If you decide to proceed with surgery an operative date which works well with your schedule will be chosen. Patients typically need to arrive in the area 1-2 days prior to their surgery date for a pre-operative visit which is scheduled at New England Center for Endometriosis in Scarborough. At this visit, you will have a physical exam & the details of your procedure will be reviewed. You will be sent for lab work & given instructions for a pre-operative bowel prep. You will also be provided with directions and specific details for the day of surgery. Depending on the extent of your surgery your procedure will be done either at the Maine Medical Center, Bramhall Campus in Portland or the Maine Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Center in Scarborough. Patients report to the surgical facility the morning of surgery and most are discharged the day of surgery or the next morning. Patients who have bowel involvement will usually be admitted to the hospital for 2-3 days. This way the entire process is completed in 1 trip. Postoperative patients are expected to stay in the area for at least a day after discharge to ensure you are stable & ready for travel. I am in contact with the patient while she is recovering from surgery.

  3. Billing & Fees
The Hospital Facility Fee is the most costly part of surgical care. Hospital facility-related services include the operating room, recovery room, medical and surgical supplies, hospital-based nurse-anesthetists (they help the Anesthesiologist but are employed by the hospital), and laboratory testing. Patients from outside the USA generally do not have health insurance. For patients from outside the USA, we have set up a plan for the Hospital Facility Fee, based on the length of the surgical procedure.

This will cover everything from when you arrive at the hospital till when you leave the hospital. When surgery is scheduled, then there are specific people you will be placed in contact with and they will help you through the process of the Facility Fee.  Spectrum is the company that manages Anesthesiology and Pathology, and these are billed separately. When surgery is scheduled, there is a person you will be placed in contact with, and this person will help you through the process of paying for Anesthesia and Pathology. I determine the procedures the patient needs, come up with the surgery fee, and give all the patients a 10% discount off the top for paying up-front. Surgical fee is paid in Cash, Cashier’s Check, or Credit Card at the preoperative office visit prior to surgery. Maine Medical Center has Interpreters available.
